Benazir Bhutto among 16 others assassinated in suicide bomb attack in Rawalpindi-Pakistan

December 27, 2007 - Islamabad, Pakistan: Opposition leader and Chairperson of Pakistan Peoples Party Benazir Bhutto died in suicide bomb attack today during her election campaign. She was returning after addressing the gathering at Liaquat Bagh Rawalpindi.

She was taken to the hospital immediately after the bomb blast where she subsumed to bullet injury that she had received in her neck. The bomb blast was followed by gun shots.

The charismatic leader of Pakistan People Party had returned home after remaining in exile to contest in the forthcoming election due to be held in early January next year. She had escaped a similar bomb attack in Karachi during her welcome procession. She and her colleagues remained safe as they were traveling in bullet proof vehicle then.

She had been in forefront of all election activities and had also claimed that she had furnished names of 3 people to the President of Pakistan who were trying to assassinate her.
