BOGOTA, Colombia - The Columbia’s Child Welfare Agency’s director on Sunday said that the freed hostage, Clara Rojas has been granted the custody of her 3 year old child who was taken away from her while she was in a rebel camp in the jungle.

Elvira Forero, head of the Child Welfare Institute of Columbia told reporters “Emmanuel must be with his mother”. “He must enjoy this right that has been taken away from him by the FARC.”

The freed hostage Clara Rojas in 2002 got captured by the FARC or Revolutionary Armed Forces of Columbia while she was campaigning for presidential candidate Ingrid Betancourt. On Sunday, she paid a visit to the boy with a photo of him that was hanging around her neck.

After the boy was taken away from his mother he was handed over to State health services with leishmaniasis and a broken arm. The boy would be undergoing some medical and psychological treatments and could be returned to his mother within 2 weeks, Forero said.

“He spent his first 11 months of life with a fractured arm, without any medical support that would help him cope with his pain,” said Forero. “Today, he is a happy boy. He is sweet and loving and has developed, thanks to the general attention given to him by our institute.”

On Thursday, former congresswomen Consuelo Gonzalez and Rojas were freed by the revolutionaries of Columbia in a deal that was brokered by Hugo Chavez, the president of Venezuela. The revolutionaries continue to hold more than 700 hostages, including Betancourt.
