2008-01-15 05:20:13 (GMT) (Caymanmama.com - Health News News)As Construction Begins on New Cyberknife Center, More Options are Made Available for Patients with Inoperable Tumors and Lesions for the Near Future
January 14, 2008- The Cyberknife is a fairly recent innovation for helping patients with inoperable tumors and lesions improve their chances for eliminating them. The current number of centers that provide the Cyberknife treatment option available is relatively low within the United States. As more and more patients have been proven to reap the benefits of this type of treatment, the demand for centers across the globe is steadily increasing. Tampa Bay, Florida is the latest U.S. city to break ground on a new center, providing more opportunities for candidates of the revolutionary treatment in the near future.
CyberKnife Treatments -
Candidates for Cyberknife treatments are those with tumors or lesions in areas of the boy deemed inoperable, or those who have received the maximum amount of radiation allowed with conventional radiosurgery. Regions of the body suitable for Cyberknife treatment include the brain, spinal cord, lungs, and other major organs of the body. The non-invasive treatment enables radiation to be administered with pinpoint accuracy to affected areas, without damaging healthy surrounding cells or tissue. The process is said to be painless, with no side effects, and patients are typically able to resume normal activities soon after.
The Unveiling of a New Center
Two current well known Cyberknife centers in the United States are located in Miami, and Palm Beach, Florida. The Tampa Bay center addition will make Florida a prominent location for receiving the image guided, robotic surgery. Construction on the center began on January 9, 2008 and expected to be completed in July of this year. The new center will be owned and operated by Tampa Bay Radiosurgical Associates, LLC.
