Divorce Increases Emotional Distance between Fathers and Teens

Fathers usually have this disadvantage of less involvement in their children’s affair than mothers. With such things like divorce, there is a distance existed in between fathers and their children likely to increase more and some other who are even minimally involved, they are more often separated physically and the involvement with their become less.
The study done by the researchers at Penn State is based on data collected from the students of high school who took part in the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health. A segment of those students were interviewed in the study initially and then the interview was again taken from the same students after five years. At the beginning of this meticulous study, there were 71 percent of students reported having a close relationship with their mothers whereas only 57 percent of them had close relationship with their fathers.
However, after five years, it is reported that 48 percent of the youngsters have been found possessing close relationship with their fathers who are still married as compared to just 25 percent of the children of their divorced parents, have close relationship with their fathers. There was no significant difference seen in the relationship of children with their mothers before and even after the divorce of their parents.
Co-author of the study, Dr. Alan Booth, said, “Future research may look at information directly from the fathers about their evaluation of father-child closeness…” but this research was completely based on the perception of youth on their relationships with their parents.
