Microsoft billionaire Bill Gates on Friday announced a new project in which he pledged $306 million in grants for developing farming in poor countries. This was done as a part of corporate social responsibility at a main meeting of business chiefs.
Bill Gates who is due to step down from the Board of Microsoft later this year received standing ovation for his announcement at the request of U2 lead singer Bono. This announcement drew attention from the financial woes which was a matter of debate at the world Economic Forum held at Davos, Switzerland.
This will be the first time that Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will be making a foray in to agriculture. The foundation has been working on AIDS from quite a long time. This will help change the billionaire’s image of a talking shop which works little to solve the problems discussed.
“If we are serious about ending extreme hunger and poverty around the world, we must be serious about transforming agriculture for small farmers, most of whom are women” said Bill Gates. “The challenge here is to design a system including profit and recognition to do more for the poor” he added and insisted on new form of “creative capitalism”.
The World Economic Forum, Davos gathers more then 2,500 key business figures and government leaders from across the globe saw first time appearance of British Prime Minister, Gordon Brown who highlighted the role of World Bank in fighting climate change. Even a touch of glamour was added by U2 lead singer Bono making a second appearance at the summit.
