GRAND CAYMAN — As Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines’ luxury vessel, Liberty of the Seas, docks in Georgetown, Grand Cayman for scheduled shore excursions on Jan. 30, guests will be invited to attend a special presentation on coral reefs by Dr. Andrew C. Baker, a scientist at the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science. The event will begin at 1 p.m. and be hosted by Books & Books at their new Cayman Island location (45 Market Street, Grand Cayman).

An internationally renowned expert on coral reefs and climate change, Baker has spent the last several days aboard the Liberty as part of an “Alumni & Friends of the UM Rosenstiel School” cruise. Baker’s lecture at the new bookstore, titled “Caribbean Coral Reef Ecosystems in an Era of Climate Change,” will highlight the importance of coral advocacy amidst threats of warming oceans, habitat destruction, pollution and disease. Widely published and lauded for his scientific innovation and facility in conveying his research to diverse audiences, Baker has been featured on CNN, BBC World Service News, and NPR. Most recently, he helped launch SeaWeb’s ‘Too Precious to Wear’ coral conservation campaign, targeting the fashion and interior design industries.
