Jo Hatta Schaffer is a 67 years old Vietnam War veteran who suffers from post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, she got a Chihuahua service dog named Cody who cuddles and play with her in her depression. For Schaffer, service dog was the best alternative therapy as psychiatric dog service.

Like the blinds who are helped by guide dogs, psychiatric dogs help people who suffer from mental illness, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorder and PTSD. The dogs are trained well in order to know when their owner is suffering from a panic attacks or severe bouts of depression. During such circumstances, the animal calms down his/her master by giving curling in masters lap.

Similarly, Karen Alexander, a 52 year old Persian Gulf War veteran relies on a Burmese mountain dog-Cindy who helps Karen in reviving her anxiety and depressions. According to Karen-”She’ll come up and touch me, and that is enough of a stimulus to break the loop, bring me back to reality.” She continued-”Sometimes I’ll scratch my hand until it’s raw and won’t realize until she comes up to me and brings me out. She’s such a grounding influence for me.”

According to the president and founder of Psychiatric Service Dog Society Dr. Joan Esnayra, for the past decade, the use of service dog in the treatment of mental illness has shown an increase. Dr. Joan has worked with more than thousands of patients.

However, it is estimated the number of patients suffering from PTSD are showing increasing as young veterans are likely to suffer more chances pf mental disorder in comparison to a 40 years veteran.
