Art @ Governors 2008 – Grand Cayman Islands
2008-02-13 00:33:20 (GMT) (Caymanmama.com - Cayman Islands News)Grand Cayman, February 9, 2008 —For the eight year, the Cayman Islands National gallery hosted the very popular “Art @ Governors” in the gardens at the Governors residence on Seven Mile Beach. This year it was with the kind support of Governor Jack, his wife Mariko and funding by the local legal firm – Walkers. As usual it was open to the public and was as customary, a family event.
The weather was “another day in paradise” bright sunlight with soft southing breezes. Organizational improvements included the provision of a shuttle bus to enable people without personal means of transportation to attend, parking facilities in the paved and marked parking lots on the opposite side of the road for those who had, copious supply of free tasty snacks for everyone and rides on Cat Boats, courtesy of the Cat Boat Club, on the beach adjoining the Governor’s house.
Main art activities involved children creating a huge world map collage from their individual paintings and various cultural groups displaying their arts, crafts, traditional thatching and local costumes. Featured artist David Bridgeman displayed his work while creating a piece for the event.
A Gallery Media Tent featured National Gallery DVDs and power point presentations on the many programmes offered throughout the afternoon. In addition, there was also an abundance of entertainment to ensure every family member, regardless of age or cultural background, was satisfied. The schools bands from George Gray and George Hicks were prominent playing under a tent just inside the gates. They frequently drew applause from the flowing large and appreciative crowd. Other contributors were DJs from One World productions spinning global fusion and some of the best dance troupes and soloists performing dances from around the world. Exhibits by numerous Not For Profit organizations rounded out the fare.
The governor himself, with, a camera hanging from his shoulder and looking as casual as everyone else, mingled with the crowd. He visited stalls at all points on the grounds and conversed with artists and admirers of the exhibits. There can be no dispute that “Art @ Governor’s 2008” was another resounding success.
