Microsoft fined a record $1.3 billion by EU
2008-02-28 15:40:45 (GMT) (Caymanmama.com - Technology News)BRUSSELS, Belgium (AP) – A record $1.3 billion has been charged as a fine from Microsoft Corp. by The European Union on Wednesday as it alleged to charge rivals a lot of money for the software information.
“Unreasonable prices” were charged by the company from software developers who were willing to establish compatibility between products and the Windows desktop operating system until October last year, said EU regulators.
Microsoft said that fines have been made for past issues which have already been resolved. They also claimed that the company is now following new principles so as to make open its products. The fine had been the largest to be borne by one company till date and this is also the first instance when a business has been penalized by EU as it failed to obey the antitrust order.
The penalty even superseded the decision of March 2004 when Microsoft was fined $613 million accompanied by an order to share its communication information within next 120 days with its rivals, whose appeal was further taken to the EU court where it lost in September last year.
EU suspected that the crucial information regarding interoperability for the desktop PC software was withheld by Microsoft, as this area makes it the leading supplier of the world. This was done so that it can attract new buyers market, thereby damage rivals which create programs for the workgroup servers which helps to connect computers in an office with each other and also to the faxes and printers.
