DVD versus HD/DVD

Digital versatile disk and digital video disk are the full-forms for DVD, which is high density optical disk designed for the storage of video and data. In the 1990s, HDVT entered the market that deals with removable storage devices. After two years, two corporation groups were made to make standards for high-density optical storage. The first group comprises in Philips and Sony, the other consists of Time Warner, Toshiba and Hitachi. Sony initiated the programs for application of DVR Blue and UDO or ultra density optical.

There had been a war between HD DVD and DVD. The forum of Digital Video Disk brawled over the issue if it would be better to employ Blue rays considering the fact that they are physically dissimilar from Digital Video Disks and expensive as well. In the starting stage, it was also problematic. To avert the costly format war, DVD forum and Blue Ray Disc Association started to compromise.

HD DVD and DVD disagreed over the storage space. The latter one has 15 GB single layer capacity, 30 GB dual layer capacity and 51 GB triple layer disc. The former comprise in file systems like ISO, UDF and many others. Audio format AC3 and Dolby digital formats can be played with HD DVD. A great diversity of resolution is supported by the HighDef format so that the video can be played.

When compared on the basis of resolution, generally 720×576 is the maximum resolution that is supported by a standard 4.7 GB Disk. On the other hand, a 720p resolution is supported by a HighDefTV.
