Dvd Review- “Awake”- Does it succeed to keep you awake?

The Hayden Christensen-Jessica Alba thriller ,which was released on November 30th, 2007 by MGM Distribution Company and Winston Studios, made $14,373,825 at the box office.
Awake is about a man(Christensen) who suffers “Anesthetic Awareness” , which causes him to be awake but paralyzed during a heart transplant surgery, performed by his close friend, and doctor(Terrence Howard) . While Christensen must suffer this horrible accident, the love of his life(Alba) and his mother(Lena Olin) must wait eagerly in the waiting room for his recovery.
Is Awake a good film? Although it is most definitely not Oscar winning material it does succeed on many levels. First of all, it scares many people away from operations and an anesthesia injection. Also it most definitely succeeds as a thriller, especially during the operation portions where Christensen realizes that he is still awake, and when Alba’s true colors are revealed.
As far as performances go, Christensen is by far one of the most underrated actors of today’s generation. He enacts the role with confidence. Alba’s character is one that needed a great actor to do justice to the role- and unfortunately Alba does not do that. Terrence Howard and Lena Olin are amazing as the supporting roles.
The dvd of Awake is available in all retail stores, however if you want to rent it you will only find it at Blockbuster, as it is an Exclusive Blockbuster release. The dvd features out-takes, bloopers, and a commentary with director Joby Harold. Overall, if you like thrillers, then check Awake out, it surely provides some chills.
