Anti-Psychotic Drug faces lawsuit after lawsuit: What will the fate of Zyprexa be?
2008-03-12 22:16:23 (GMT) (Caymanmama.com - Law News)In recent times Zyprexa, the anti-psychotic drug most often used to treat bipolar and schizophrenic patients, has been receiving countless lawsuits from different states for many reasons such as uses that were not approved by the Food and Drug Administration, misleading advertising, and harmful side effects. On March 12th, 2007 the state of Connecticut filed a law suit against Eli Lilly, the distributing company of Zyprexa.
In this lawsuit Connecticut hopes to regain the $190 million dollars that they had spent over the years supporting Zyprexa. Reasons for this latest lawsuit include, using the drug illegally for uses that were not deemed suitable, as well as the hidden side effects of the drug, such as increased weight, cardiovascular diseases, and diabetes, that were not mentioned when Lilly marketed this product.
Representatives of Lilly tried to make it clear that Zyprexa was not used illegally and that doctors reserve the right and are allowed to prescribe drugs for reason that have not been approved by the FDA.
As of today, Eli Lilly has paid over one billion dollars to different states to compensate the plethora of law suits it has faced lately. The future of Zyprexa looks bleak.
