EPA declaration for tough standard to reduce smog

WASHINGTON (AP) — The air of umpteen U.S counties is undoubtedly so dirty that sometimes it becomes difficult even to breathe, said the government on Wednesday and ordered an increase in efforts in this regard with an investment of multi billion dollars.

The Environmental Protection Agency announced its intention to reduce the ozone amount, also called smog, that should be permissible in air. However, according to experts, the lower standard is still short of the adequate standard that should be there to significantly reduce asthma and heart attacks because of inhaling smog-clogged air.

These new requirements of smog are the “the most stringent standards ever,” said Stephen Johnson, EPA Administrator. He also admitted that around 345 counties will be required, from a total of over 700 counties which will be monitored for quality improvements in air as these counties now have dirty air which cannot be claimed to be healthy to breathe.

Johnson added that there is considerable time left with local and state officials so as to meet with new requirements. There are around 20 years that they have for a few counties that have even the most serious of pollution problems. As anticipated by EPA, the counties number that will not be able to meet the new requirements of healthy air will drop to around 28 by 2020.

Considering the old standard that have been worked a decade before, are 84 counties that fall short of meeting the standard.

The whole Oklahoma and Florida at present comply with standard of smog. Around nine counties of every state are not able to meet the difficult requirements.
