MTA Congestion Price Plan
2008-03-26 14:52:58 (GMT) (Caymanmama.com - News)CNN reported that first the Mass Transit Authority (MTA) postponed the $30 million in improvement of services, and the day after, Mayor Michael Bloomberg reassures the cynical straphangers, who are hurt by a recent hike in the fares, that the fees from the plan will be invested in projects of public transit. “I think the public has every right to be skeptical,” said Bloomberg. “I can just tell you that I am giving the public my word that these monies will be used for mass transit for the next 646 days I’m in office and that I will do everything I can after that as a private citizen to make sure that … the MTA lives up to its commitment.”
The State Legislature and the City Council must approve the congestion price plan of the Mayor by 7th of April, otherwise the city will not get the one-time grant of $354 million by the federation that is likely to be spent on some short-term improvement plans of transit, including a faster service of buses along the Fordham Road in Bronx, as announced by Bloomberg. In addition to that, according to the estimate of the city officials, the fees provided by the congestion pricing is likely to generate an annual income of $491 million, which will be leveraged for borrowing billions of long-term, major projects of mass transit.
The mayor has also announced many transit improvement projects that will be instituted only after the approval of congestion pricing. According to the city officials, the improvements like the expanded and faster Bx12 line of bus will be implemented before the beginning of the congestion pricing.
