Diesel prices breaking the backbone of American economy
2008-03-27 14:16:19 (GMT) (Caymanmama.com - Business News)There isn’t anything to be surprised about if the pizza delivery boy charges you an extra buck for the increase in gas prices, but when it comes to the truck guy who transports tomatoes, milks cows, increasing the price for hike in fuel prices isn’t an easy thing.
From truckers to loggers and farmers, fishermen and workers, the high diesel prices are making things worse for the trucking industry with every passing day and have led to the backbone of American economy to the edge of breaking.
“I’m in debt, do I turn in all my equipment, potentially lose my home?” asks Jim Gossett, the operator/owner truck driver with a daughter and wife in Chapel Hill, N.C.
For nine years, Gosset has been driving a truck. From the past few years, he runs one specialized carrier, transporting boats to the dealers and marinas in the various parts of the country. Earlier his profit margin which used to be 25 percent has now been reduced to mere 5 percent due to the almost triple hike in the prices of diesel in the past few years.
Intense competition in industry forces him not to increase the cost of his services, he says. Many others whose work involves usage of huge amounts of diesel echo the same grief.
“You can’t get any work if you raise your prices, you just grin and bear it, people are only going to pay so much to get their land cleared.” Tyson Clay said who was filling his bulldozer’s tank at the gas station situated in the Camden, Alabama.
