Get rid of your abdominal fat
2008-03-28 16:25:42 (GMT) (Caymanmama.com - Health News News)A new study has proved in its alarming results that people with big bellies in their 40’s are more prone to dementia. Having a lot of abdominal fat can lead to getting Alzheimer’s disease or dementia in your later ages. It has already been found that people with big bellies are more prone to a risk of diabetes and chances of a heart stroke. Now, dementia can also be added to that list. As the study author Rachel Whitmer of Kaiser Permanente division of Oakland, California describes the findings. “Now we can add dementia to that.”
This study was conducted on a group consisting of 6, 583 men and women. The results of this study have been published in the Neurology’s online issues. The researchers have found that people who have a high belly measurement in comparison to their body weight are more likely to suffer from dementia, almost 89% higher. Whitmer further adds that it’s not clear that how a large belly can lead to dementia but, it has been found out that a high belly leads brain to produce substances that harm the brain.
Dr. Jose Luchsinger of the Columbia University who had not participated in this study but had earlier taken part in a similar study about overweight and dementia however refuses to believe the findings. He says that such a study cannot prove that abdominal fat can cause dementia. However, he later acknowledged that he found the study results to be “highly plausible” and I’m not surprised at all.” He attributed the findings to presence of high insulin levels in pot-bellied people.
