‘Patsy’s’ clashes between a restaurant and a pizzeria
2008-04-03 14:29:16 (GMT) (Caymanmama.com - Food News)New York: CNN reported that the name “Patsy’s” has been used by a pizzeria as well as a fine-dining restaurant since 1944. The pizzeria opened in 1933, and in 1944, a restaurant opened with the same name in the theatre district of Manhattan. The owner of the pizzeria, Patsy Lancieri, sent a letter to the owner of the restaurant, Pasquale Patsy Scognamillo, in 1946 asking him not to use the name.
The 78 years old son of Scognamillo, Sal, told the jury on Wednesday that initially his father decided to call a lawyer or change the name, but finally Sal called the pizzeria owner and told him that the nature of the two businesses are entirely different from one another- one is a restaurant and other is a pizzeria, soo there is no harm in co-existing peacefully. “I think we could get along. I will not bother you anymore,” said Lancieri, as per Sal.
Things were doing fine until the widow of Lancieri sold the pizzeria to Frank Brija in 1991, after which it began to expand. First it opened at 7 places in Manhattan, one in the Staten Island and Jericho Turnpike in the Syosset.
Now, Patsy’s restaurant has become quite famous for the all-star patrons cast who once consisted of Frank Sinatra and now features George Clooney. The descendants of the restaurant have approached the court and claimed the pizzeria has broken the trademark laws and to has damaged the reputation of the restaurant by using the similar sign and same name.
George Gelato, a man who has been visiting Patsy’s restaurant from his childhood said, “I was pretty excited they were opening a Patsy’s right down the road from me,” but he was disappointed to see that it was not his favourite restaurant.
