The President of the World Bank has urged an immediate curb on surging food prices to fight the problem of hunger and the resulting violence in many countries. Robert Zoellick has said that the international communities have to come forward and “to put our money where our mouth is” and try to help the needy. He described the situation of world hunger as quite grave and said, “It is as stark as that.”

He has asked the international governments to contribute to the UN Food Aid program and help in fulfilling the requirement of $500 million by May 1. Zoellick further said, “It is critical that governments confirm their commitments as soon as possible and others begin to commit. Prices have only risen further since the WFP issued that appeal, so it is urgent that governments step up.”

Zoellick has expressed this urgency after a policeman was killed in Haiti where riots started over food prices and also there was subsequent looting. This also led to the fall of the government in Haiti.

Moreover, Zoellick has criticized the indifferent attitude at the international finance meetings. He said that these meetings are usually “about the talk” but he had now observed a “greater sense of intensity and focus” among ministers. He also said that the WFP is now lending a $1 million aid to Haiti for feeding programs. He said that the bank was also looking forward to help other countries who are facing restricted cash transfer problems and was aiming to help these nations to provide food at the workplaces.
