The scene of doing yoga by various people at Shepherd Center in Atlanta, Georgia, where the yoga students attend adaptive yoga class weekly is no more an unusual. Adaptive yoga is derived from original yoga in which the poses of yoga are modified for the disabled or people who have health conditions.

According to yoga instructor, Karen O’Donnell Clarke, adaptive yoga has successfully helped people reduce impairment such as multiple sclerosis, a sports injury, fibromyalgia or an inactive lifestyle, post-surgical conditions, stroke, Parkinson’s disease, or even arthritis. She further says, “Pretty much if you name a health condition, yoga can help with it”.

Sarah Knopf, a physical therapist says that the popularity of class is increasing because many patients believe that this is the way to strengthen their physical health and bodies and to overcome any health impairment quickly. Knopf again said, “The adaptive yoga will take into consideration the patient’s limitations. A lot of patients with MS, for example, don’t do well if they get overheated. So, with adaptive yoga, the instructor will take things nice and slowly, focusing more on breathing and relaxation…. If you are doing yoga in a gym, it’s a little faster-paced.”

One more advantage of adaptive yoga class is that more than two people in one group can do something different to each other.

Concentration should be given more to the technique of breathing according to an instructor, Terri Leonard. He said, “If you have a disability and you’re struggling with managing your body, managing your symptoms, coming to a yoga class is all about slowing down, and really focusing on your body in a way that perhaps you didn’t focus before your injury or illness”.
