No overtime for NYC police officers
2008-04-22 16:57:17 (GMT) (Caymanmama.com - Top Stories News)New York: CNN reported that after the departure of Pope Benedict XVI on Sunday from New York, the city returned to its normal business, the special restrictions on the flights have been lifted off, the police escorts on the upper east side of the 72nd street have been called off and streets have been opened for local up and down.
After the departure of the Pope, the officials of the city are comparing the financial benefits of his coming to city with the cost that the city had to spend for hosting his holiness. According to Mayor Michael Bloomberg, “This is one of those things were the expenses are relatively negligible, virtually impossible to measure, but the benefits will go on for a long time.”
It was expected that the police officers will be paid a significant amount for their overtime, but the mayor said that the police department of the city has an annual budget of $5.5 billion including the funding set for the special events. The city reported that when Pope John Paul II came to the city in the year 1995, the police officers were given an over time cost that totalled to $4 million. But this time, overtime costs have not been even evaluated.
