New York: According to the Associated Press, a wall-mounted gadget, called Mosquito, has been introduced in the US and is designed to drive away loiterers by making a shrill and piercing sound that is audible only to young adults and teens.

Daniel Santell, the importer of Mosquito in North America said that around 1,000 pieces of the gadget have been sold in Canada and the US since its debut. The sound of the device is like a mosquito buzzing in the ear mixed with fingernails dragging on a chalkboard.

15-year old Eddie Holder has experienced its noise and said, “It’s horrible, loud and irritating. I have to hurry out of the building because it’s so annoying. It’s this screeching sound that you have to get away from or it will drive you crazy.” The sound can only be heard by young people and teens that have responsive hair cells in the inner ears.

The Children’s Commission appointed by the government of England proposed a ban on the product as it is described as an infringement on the civil and basic rights of the youth. “There was an outcry, and people didn’t like the idea of torturing kids’ ears like that,” says Ronald Dlugosz, a town official. “People here don’t tolerate that kind of stuff.”
