Diamond dealer blamed of thieving $3.4 million in gems
2008-04-25 15:48:24 (GMT) (Caymanmama.com - News)Dallas, Texas (CaymanMama.com) - It was reported that business associates accused a Manhattan-based diamond dealer of stealing precious stones worth $3.4 million.
Alfred Avi Taub made a police complaint that a robber, by the use of pepper spray, stole about $1 million of diamonds from him in June. But according to 45 dealers who claimed in a lawsuit that Avi Taub is a thief consigned jewels to him and also said that the value of missing products are even more.
29 year old Taub from Long Beach, Long Island appealed in the Manhattan Court that he is not guilty to insurance fraud, grand larceny and other charges filed against him, on Tuesday. Justice A. Kirke Bartley of State Supreme Court declared him to give him bail on the charge of $100,000.
Taub on June 13, told police that he had made a visit to jewelry stores in Chinatown and took away more than $1 million worth of diamonds in a leather bag as told by Barbara Thompson, spokeswoman for the Manhattan district attorney’s office. According to Taub, someone came up his behind, sprayed paper spray on his face and then snatched that bag from him. He does not recognize the attacker and has never seen him before.
“He’s not running away from this case,” Taub told the judge. The dealers’ court papers said, “The Taubs got their hands on the large number of diamonds by carefully building trust in the industry during the preceding year and the lawsuit is still pending.”
