Influence of the Internet may cause teachers and parents to frown

According to a survey, in spite of constant efforts to ensure formal language in writing assignments of school, almost two-thirds of teens agreed that the emoticons along with several other informal styles have now crept into their writings.

It is nothing but the influence of the Internet that can be blamed for this hindrance. Teens who have been indulged in social-networking websites like Orkut are more inclined toward the use of such emoticons.

In another study of The Pew Internet and American Life Project released on Thursday, it was discovered that teens who have their blogs or are familiar with social networking websites like MySpace and Facebook have more affinity to stray into the nonstandard elements while doing their school assignments that require formal writing.

The results therefore may give many prents and teachers a frown – though the author’s of the study say that they still see a ray of hope.

“It’s a teachable moment, if you find that in a child’s or student’s writing, that’s an opportunity to address the differences between formal and informal writing. They learn to make the distinction… just as they learn not to use slang terms in formal writing,” says Amanda Lenhart, a senior research specialist working at Pew.
