California (CaymanMama.com) — CNN reported that James Karl Buck, a graduate student at the University of California, Berkeley, freed himself from a jail in Egypt with the help of a one word blog post from his mobile phone. On April 10, he and his translator Mohammed Maree were arrested as they were covering a protest against the government in Mahalla, Egypt. As they were being taken to the police station, James sent a message ‘Arrested’ to his contacts and friends using Twitter, a micro-blogging site. Within a few seconds, his colleagues and friends were alerted that he was arrested.

A social-networking site, Twitter allows its users to send tweets and status updates from instant messaging services, cell phones and Facebook in a maximum 140 characters. Normally, Twitter is useful in keeping people connected in somewhat less urgent circumstances, but with its increased popularity, it can also be used during earthquakes and other natural disasters to send messages.

When Hossam el-Hamalawy, a blogger in Cairo, came to know about Buck’s arrest, he was worried about his safety. Every two hours, Buck would send updates saying that he spoke to the prosecutors, he is still not charged and he is worried about Mohammed Maree. “Usually the first thing the police go for is the detainees’ cameras and cellular phones,” said el-Hamalawy. “I’m surprised they left James with his phone.”
