Activists call for special prosecutor in Bell case

New York, NY (CaymanMama.com) — The acquittal of three policemen in the shooting case of Sean Bell lays bares the system with all its flaws that is in the dire need of desperate reforms. According to civil right activists, a special prosecutor should be appointed to handle like cases.

According to Norman Siegel a former head of New York Civil Liberties Union and civil rights lawyer said, “It is difficult, almost impossible, to prosecute on-duty police officers in police misconduct cases, especially those involving homicide allegations.” He continued, “The verdict underscores the need for systemic change.”

On yesterday, a group of black leaders met at the Harlem headquarters of National Action Network and met Rev. Al Sharpton and said that they are going to meet theAttorney General Michael B Mukasey and the US Department of Justice. They are urging the Federal Agency to prosecute the officers who are involved the shooing case of Sean Bell. After Friday’s acquittal, the Justice Department said that it will review the case so as to see whether any federal civil right was violated during the justice.

A day earlier, Siegel called upon Gov. David A Paterson and asked for the system that punishes the guilty officers along with handing the cases of corruption.
