New York Police pushing new powers to monitor air quality
2008-05-01 15:10:41 (GMT) (Caymanmama.com - Top Stories News)New York, New York (CaymanMama.com) — The New York Police Department is introducing a law introducing regulatory devices to detect chemical, biological or radiological attacks. Environmentalists as well as community activists stoutly opposed this move as they believe that this proposed law invades the liberties given to civil.
This introduced bill would give the authority to the police department where and how these commercial detectors are used by the public and how the permission is given to issue them, after being debated in the Committee of city council regarding Public Safety. The users of the detectors will have to inform police to make them alert. According to the officials, New York would be the first city in US where such detectors will be regulated if the bill is passed.
Joel Shufro, a member of New York Committee for Occupational Safety and Health, has represented nearly 50 organizations that are against the bill stating that patrol officers after getting authority from legislation and will create a chilling effect on already gathered environmental data by making on-the-spot decision about the usage of the equipment for monitoring the air.
Shufro also mentioned the period after 9/11 incident when privately collected environmental data served up the public interest. He said, “In times of emergencies, [the police department’s] conservative response will be to issue tickets or seize the equipment or take the person in for questioning, we feel this is an inappropriate use of police power.”
However, the chairman of Public Safety, Peter Vallone Jr. said, “The police department has assured us that they only want to regulate early warning devices, not equipment used to monitor the environment after an event. The hard part is getting the law to reflect that”.
