Atlanta, Georgia (CaymanMama.com) — Maggie O’Conner prefers garlic on her Mexican lasagna and Melissa Thornton uses basil in her turkey wrap. For all those who think that these girls are professional chefs, the fact is that they are 10 to 11 years girls who are taking cooking lessons. Along with food lessons, these girls are also taught to have a positive image of their body.

According to fourth grader, Melissa Thornton, “I think you need to balance things.” When Melissa works, her mother, Dina Zeckhausen, a clinical psychologist, oversees Melissa. Dina Zeckhausen is the founder of Eating Disorders Information Network who gathered 8 moms and daughters at Atlanta’s The Cook Warehouse.

Dina feels that mothers should be the role models of their children. Dina said, “These are just ordinary moms; a lot of ordinary moms these days have struggled with their own body image. They want to raise healthy daughters. They don’t want to pass their own anxieties down to their girls.” Dina notes that she asks moms to eliminate “negative body talk.”

According to the National Eating Disorders Association, there has been a phenomenal rise in eating disorders. A recent survey conducted by the National Eating Disorder Association, showed that 10 million females suffer from bulimia and anorexia.
