MySpace awarded $234 million in anti-spam case
2008-05-14 15:19:59 (GMT) (Caymanmama.com - Dallas News News)Dallas, Texas (CaymanMama.com) — CNN reported that MySpace, one of the most popular social network sites, has been awarded $234 million over junk messages that were sent to MySpace members. According to the Associated Press, this award is believed to be the biggest anti-spam prize ever.
After Walter Rines and Sanford Wallace, the most prominent defendants of Internet spam, failed to appear in court on Monday, a government judge ruled against the two in favor of MySpace. Wallace has been given the nicknames ‘Spam King’ and ‘Spamford’ as he previously held a past role as head of a company which sent around 30 million spam messages in a day during the 1990’s.
Although the service providers have to go through a tough time collecting such an award often, it is a full-size victory for the News Corp. owned MySpace. But if the site does not collect, it will hope that the judgment can discourage other spamming companies. Any company who is considering to get into the spamming industry will deter from getting involved in it, as the spammers do not want to get prosecuted because their main aim is making money.
In Las Vegas, there was not any telephone listing of Wallace, services were disconnected in Stratham for 2 numbers for Walter Rines and there was no listing of the third number.
