Karachi, Pakistan (CaymanMama.com) — CNN reported that due to tight household budgets, the people of New York are seeking assistance for their pets, including the foster parents. Many foster care and pet rescue services report that the number of requests from pet owners have really increased during the last 3-6 months. Most of them are people who have suddenly lost their employment, home or apartments.

Safety Net is a program sponsored by the city which helps the financially struggling owners of pets. Joyce Friedman, the coordinator of the program, said that they received 6-9 requests every week during the past month.

One instance is when Louis Page gave Goldy, a 12-year old cat, to Safety Net during July 2007 after his customer job service was taken away from him. He was not able to pay the medical bills for his sick pet which costed up to $500 per month. Safety Net helped in providing care for the cat and found a foster family for 6 months until Louis was able to find a cheaper house and started working at Vonage.

The Animal Care & Control of the city oversees the program and acknowledges that an increasing number of pet owners are approaching for help.
