Robotic hawks effective in deterring pigeons
2008-05-16 20:44:53 (GMT) (Caymanmama.com - News)Tulsa, Oklahoma (CaymanMama.com) — CNN reported that robotic hawks have been deployed on airport and corporation campuses to drive away unwanted birds in the area. The mechanical hawks have been manufactured by the Robop Limited. The managing director, John Donald, says that it may not be a cure-all solution for the pigeon problem in the city, but it can at least reduce the number.
The Councilman Felder is planning to propose a bill which will fine people with $1000 who will feed the birds and will create ‘pigeon czar’ that would be responsible for matters related to pigeons such as their cleanup. The robots designed to combat the immense population of pigeons in the city is not a part of the Felder bill but it can be a good option if the administration feels that investing in the high-tech hawks is worth it.
The robot costs $4200, manufactured in Scotland and is designed to act, look and sound like a peregrine falcon. While the effect of the robots is still not clear, they have definitely attracted media attention worldwide and have helped the city council of Liverpool to spread the message to the locales to not feed pigeons.
The Robot does not fly on its own and has to be moved periodically to trick the pigeons, while a similar robotic hawk, the Falco Robot manufactured in Spain flies on its own. Another point is that the Falco Robot is controlled by remote and needs a operator for flying it, while a Robop can work on its own for hours.
