Crown Heights attack said to be hate crime
2008-05-19 15:05:43 (GMT) (Caymanmama.com - News)Crown Heights, New York (CaymanMama.com) — CNN reported that the police commissioner of New York Police, Ray Kelly, said on Saturday that the attack in Crown Heights on the Hasidic Jewish teen is still under investigation. According to reports, a 16 year old boy was assaulted on Friday after midnight near his own home.
Police said that the watch, cell phone and bicycle of the boy were stolen. Kelly said that he also suffered from broken jaw during the incident. The boy was treated in the Kings County Hospital. According to the reports, two black men pushed the Hasidic boy, Alon Sherman, off his cycle and book away his belonging along with some money. The incident took place at Albany Boulevard.
Following the incident, a large number of the Hasidic Jews had marched through Brooklyn neighborhood on Friday while briefly blocked the traffic on the Eastern Parkway. The assault has been investigated as possibly a hate crime. The Crown Heights area has currently undergone through a tension between blacks and Jews who had peacefully co-existed in the past years since 1991 when a race riot wracked the area.
In April, the black leaders also expressed their outrage after one black college going student was allegedly attacked by 2 Jewish men in the area.
