Tucson, Arizona (CaymanMama.com) –  CNN reported that scientists started to release the Phoenix Lander’s robotic arm on Wednesday. Barry Goldstein, the project manager said that the spacecraft that landed on the Red Planet on Sunday is in its best shape and the radio glitch was just a temporary problem in the 3-month mission to explore the north arctic region of the planet.

On Tuesday, the arm could not be moved because of some problems in the radio signals but it was mended later in the day. The arm has been folded on the science deck of the Lander to keep it protected from the tremors of launching and landing. Before the spacecraft can loosen its arm, it has to rotate the wrist for releasing the latches of its forearm and the elbow and set it out like a staircase. The process may take two days and the instructions had been sent to the spacecraft on Wednesday.

Goldstein said that they will be able to receive the photographs of the partially unfolded arm by Thursday. This arm will ultimately dig the soil of the planet searching for ice that is supposed to be there within some inches or a foot beneath the surface. This will helpful in finding out whether there was or is life on the planet.
