School’s Out But Germs Are Here to Stay
2008-06-05 14:27:49 (GMT) (Caymanmama.com - Health News News)Dallas, Texas (Caymanmama.com) — In the words of Alice Cooper, “School’s out for summer” and kids are enjoying it by soaking up the sun, or playing Marco Polo in the pool. The first thing that comes to the mind of a mother is how to protect her little ones from getting sick this season. Not to worry moms, it’s not as bad as you think it is. Don’t stress yourself from trying to prevent your kids from getting sick. There are some misconceptions that moms need to clear up for the summer.
Don’t go ballistic when your child gets a mosquito bite. While there is the apparent fear of the West Nile Virus, it does not pose the same caliber of danger to children. Usually children with cases of West Nile do not show any symptoms or they may experience aches or a fever that disappear after a few days. To minimize the chances of a mosquito bite, make sure you spray your child with an insect repellent that contains concentrations of 30% or less amounts of DEET. Also, try to remove standing water in your yard as it attracts mosquitoes.
Unfortunately, it’s possible that some children may have “let go” in the public pool, but it is unlikely that your child will get impetigo from the pool. The only way your child can acquire impetigo is through direct contact with someone else who is infected. There is a higher chance for your child to get impetigo in the summer because they usually adorn open wounds such as scrapes, cuts or bug bites that are susceptible to infection. If your child gets impetigo, it may take three days for signs of any symptoms. If the impetigo is very small, an over-the-counter antibiotic like bacitracin or prescription antibiotic, Bactrobin may remove the infection and stop its growth.
So relax a little, and enjoy the summer with your children. Although it is necessary to take preliminary precautions, don’t go over board. Get some R&R and watch your kids explore the world during their well-awaited summer break.
