Dallas, Texas (CaymanMama) — Whether they are regaining energy on the football fields with sport drinks, or cramming late night for their exams with the help of energy drinks, or even at the local eatery sipping on some soda, the truth is that teenagers are consuming a large number of calories in high sweetened drinks alone. The exact number being 356. What are the effects of mixing super sweetened drinks into your diet, and how can we fix this problem? Lets take a look.

While teenagers, believe that consuming these sugary drinks have absolutely no effects on their body, they are wrong. The reality is that an excess of sugar in ones diet can actually cause a lot of problems. Studies have shown that too much sugar intake reduces the strength of your immune system. So, lets say you were around a friend who had the cold. In a normal situation your immune system is strong so it would work to fight the bacteria and germs, however suppose you have just drank a 28 oz bottle of coke and you are around that friend, your immune system will be weak and will not be able to fight the bacteria/germs, thus giving you the cold. The overabundance of sugar in your system is what causes your triglyceride level to become higher, there fore resulting in high cholesterol.

Luckily, this problem is one that has an easy fix. Parents should monitor what their children are consuming, they can do this by providing healthy alternatives in the snack pantry or fridge. Also, “monkey see monkey do”, meaning set a good example for your child by eating the right foods and watching what you eat- drink plenty of water and limit the amount of sugary drinks you drink. It is then the teens job, to be aware of what they are eating or drinking and know the harmful effects. Remember, too much of a good thing is not healthy. Consume sugar in moderation!
