Broadway saved by fresh material
2008-06-13 15:02:25 (GMT) (Caymanmama.com - Entertainment News)New York City, New York (CaymanMama.com) — In his novel “A Tale of Two Cities”, Charles Dickens wrote, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.” It seems history repeats itself in Al Hirschfeld Theatre in the month of September when it showcases the musical based on Dickens “A Tale of Two Cities.” I
t seems Dickens most quotable lines were applicable for the theater season for the year 2007-2008. The last year was one of the worst times for theatre due to 19 day long strike conducted by stagehands in the month of November. This strike had a huge effect on the fortunes of Broadway as it was reeling under the loss of million dollars while facing dissatisfied public while trying to salvage its position.
According the Broadway League, the total gross was of $937.5 million. That is a few million dollars less in comparison to the last season where the attendance saw a fall leading to $12.27 million leading to $12.3 million according to the previous season. During such hard times, Tracy Lett’s “August: Osage County” won the hearts of critics while winning every awards that was available.
Besides the pay of Lett’s, there was nothing significant in Broadway. Lett’s examination of an Oklahoma dysfunctional family that is brought to live by accomplished actors from Steppenwolf Theatre Company, Chicago. Some other plays were “The Seafarer” by Conor McPherson that is a story about poker game on Christmas Eve with a devilish participant.
Tom Stoppard came with “Rock n Roll” based in the 1960s but couldn’t gain momentum among audiences. David Mamet’s “November” was a scabrous comedy with Nathan Lane but couldn’t hold the public. Some other plays included “Boeing-Boeing” and “Is He Dead?” “Passing Strange” was an unconventional biography that became an instant hit.
Let’s see what is store for Shakespeare on Broadway.
