Atlanta, Georgia (CaymanMama.com) — CNN reported that the Georgia Aquarium had been trying to persuade sea dragons to mate and when they finally succeeded, a male sea dragon got pregnant on Tuesday after a female one transferred the eggs on his tail. The sea dragons are only found in the water off the southern Australia and this male is the third one in the US who has successfully got pregnant out of his natural habitat. The Assistant manager, husbandry and animal care, Dennis Christen, said that the male sea dragons, sea horses and pipe fishes carry eggs rather than the female ones.

Christen reported that recently, by thinning plants and adjusting the lights, the staff members of the Georgia Aquarium tried to set the mood and persuade the sea dragons to mate. However much is yet not known about the sea dragons including their routines of mating, their pregnancy also remains mysterious. When the sea dragons mate, they arch together their tails and swim along each other’s side until latching onto one another before they swim together vertically. Christen says that this procedure really looks like a ritualistic dance.

Knowing this dance can open up many problems which can help in breeding of the animals in tanks as in aquariums. Some think that if the tanks are not deep enough, the mates will not get enough time for swimming vertically. There are around 70 pink eggs that are wrapped around the tail of the male sea dragon but nobody is aware of how many of them are going to actually hatch. Other experiences of the experts say that around 60% of them may survive.

At the Aquarium, teachers and children are buzzing about the male sea dragon pregnant. Christen said that upon hatching which is expected in 4-6 weeks, the eggs will become miniature adult sea dragons and they will not need to spend time to shadow their parents for learning.
