Discovery lands safely back on earth
2008-06-16 16:49:21 (GMT) (Caymanmama.com - Technology News)Cape Canaveral, Florida (CaymanMama.com) — The Space shuttle ‘Discovery’ along with its 7 crew members landed back to earth after capping a successful job of expansion at the space station. The space shuttle moved down in a cloudy sky but landed safely at around 11:15 am on Saturday under Mark Kelly, the commander’s control. The span of the Discovery’s mission was 217 orbits, 5.7 million of miles and 14 days.
Mark Kelly and the crew members succeeded in doing everything that they had planned to do while in the orbit. They have installed the Kibo lab of Japan which is now the biggest room in the space station and the most refined science workshop. They have also delivered a pump which was used to repair the toilet.
A new resident from America was also delivered in the station replacing Garrett Reisman, an astronaut, who returned home after around 95 days. Simone Francis, his wife, was waiting for him at the Space Centre, Kennedy. In the last week, he had expressed that he was missing his wife calling her ‘doll face’ and ‘favorite Earthling.’
As the three quarters have been complete, the next fly to the station is not planned until November.
In 2003, the Columbia took off on a mission of solo-flight research and the managers were not aware the left wing of the Columbia was damaged. The shuttle was blown apart during re-entry and all the seven members on the flight were killed. This time also, the astronauts saw something flying away from the space-ship but realized that it was a small metal clip which broke off from the rudder. The engineers assured that the absence of the clip is not at all dangerous for the re-entry of the Discovery.
Three residents of the space station watched live landing of the Discovery that had been transmitted through the Mission Control.
