2008-06-17 14:54:06 (GMT) (Caymanmama.com - Entertainment News)Rome, Italy (CaymanMama.com) — On Monday, the diocese of Rome banned the filing of “Angels and Demons” in its two churches as the prequel for “The Da Vinci Code”, a popular book that raised the ire of many Catholics. According to the spokesman of Roman diocese, Monsignor Marco Fibbi, the producer of “Angels and Demons” was denied the permission to shoot the sequel as film does not conform to our views.” The movie “Angels and Demons” is directed by Ron Howard and the main star cast includes Tom Hanks.
The crew wished to film the movie at two churches as Santa Maria della Vittoria along with Santa Maria del Popolo: two famous cathedrals that showcase the sculptures and paintings by Bernini and Caravaggio while a Raphael designed chapel. In the year 2007, the movie was denied permission but the matter was raised amidst the ongoing filming for “Angels and Demons.”
The movie could not continue during the strike of Writers Guild America that stopped in February and the movie is scheduled for May 2009 release. In an Italian magazine “TV Sorrisi e Canzoni” Fibbi said, “It’s a film that treats religious issues in a way that contrasts with common religious sentiment.” He added, “We would be helping them create a work that might well be beautiful but that does not conform to our views.”
Fibbi well acknowledged the fact that Dan Brown’s “The Da Vinci Code” had certain amount of influence on their decision. The story drew strong sentiments from the church leaders as they asked for boycott the concept that Jesus married and had children while portraying Opus Dei as a brutal cult. Fibbi said, “This is a prequel to ‘The Da Vinci Code’ and it’s clear that the theme is similar.” However, Fibbi said that the ban allows the movie crew to film the exterior of churches.
