Top 100 movies named by AFI
2008-06-19 15:35:41 (GMT) (Caymanmama.com - Entertainment News)Los Angeles, California (CaymanMama.com) — The American Film Institute has named the top 100 best movies of all time based on 10 genres that included courtroom dramas, mystery, sport tales and westerns to name a few. Some of the these films that were judged by the AFI included Dorothy Gale, Snow White, Little Tramp by Charlie Chaplin, Godfather by Marlon Brando and computer Hal 9000.
The winners included: “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”, “2001: A Space Odyssey”, “The Wizard of Oz”, “City of Lights” by Charlie Chaplin and “The Godfather” by Marlon Brando. Some other equally popular movies included “The Searchers”, “Lawrence of Arabia”, “Raging Bull”, “To Kill a Mockingbird” and “Vertigo.”
It was Alfred Hitchcock that dominated over mystery. “Vertigo” got top honors along with some other movies that were successful to reach top ten positions include “Rear Window”, “North by Northwest”, and “Dial M for Murder.”
The only silent film that made it to popular movies was “City Lights” by Charlie Chaplin. “City Lights” was above “When Harry Met Sally…”, “Annie Hall” and “Sleepless in Seattle.” According to the president of AFI, George Gazzale, “This is why these shows are so important. They keep these films in the cultural conversation.” He also said, “When ‘City Lights’ is honored as the number 1 romantic comedy, millions of people will go back and watch it again.”
The best movie was formally announced in “AFI’s 10 Top 10” in the special episode of CBS. The winner was judged by filmmakers, actors, critics along with fifty nominations in every genre. Former AFI lists have ranked 100 top American movies, love stories, comedies, movie quotes and screen starts. It was Walt Disney that ruled animation category that included movies like “Snow White”, “Bambi”, “Pinocchio”, “Fantasia”, “The Lion King”, “Finding Nemo”, “Shrek” and “Toy Story.”
