Legendary comic, George Carlin dies
2008-06-24 17:00:29 (GMT) (Caymanmama.com - Entertainment News)Los Angeles, California (CaymanMama.com) — George Carlin became famous as an award-winning comedian who frequently used scatological, profane and absurdity to evoke the stark hypocrisy of everyday life. In an unfortunate news break on Sunday, it was reported that Carlin died at the age of 71 due to heart failure.
Carlin is known to have a chronic history of heart ailments attributed to his publicized abuse of alcohol and drugs. On Sunday afternoon, Carlin was admitted to the St. John’s Health Center in Santa Monica when he complained of chest pain. He died shortly after at 5:55 PM.
Last week, Carlin performed at a Las Vegas hotel and had a busy schedule while he was performing for an HBO television series. Reflecting about Carlin, Jack Burns, one of the comedy duos with whom Carlin performed during 1960’s said, “He was a genius and I will miss him dearly.” According to Ben Stiller, George Carlin was “a hugely influential force in stand-up comedy. He had an amazing mind, and his humor was brave, and always challenging us to look at ourselves and question our belief systems, while being incredibly entertaining. He was one of the greats.”
Carlin’s lines were as popular as baseball cards. His famous and witty one liners include, “Have you ever noticed that anybody driving slower than you is an idiot, and anyone going faster than you is a maniac?” His other famous lines were, “Baseball is played on a diamond, in a park. The baseball park! Football is played on a gridiron, in a stadium, sometimes called Soldier Field or War Memorial Stadium.”
The success of George Carlin can be made from the fact that he was featured in more than 20 albums and made numerous appearances on television apart from writing three best selling books. According to Carlin, while talking about the adoration his fans showered upon him, he said, “These are nice additional merit badges that you earn if you’ve left a mark on a person or on some people, I’d say it’s flattering, but flattery implies insincerity, so I call it a compliment.”
