Man stabbed on 45th Street in Manhattan
2008-06-24 17:07:29 (GMT) (Caymanmama.com - News)Manhattan, New York (CaymanMama.com) — The tourists visiting Times Square were stunned when they witnessed a crime scene wherein Juan Garcia, 23, of Manhattan was stabbed by an anonymous culprit and was left in a blood-splattered condition. The tourists around the scene were wondering whether the incident was a movie set or real.
As per police reports, Garcia was stabbed in the back on 46th Street at about 7:20 a.m. Garcia got away wound-free but the knife-wielding assailant chased him on foot up to 45th Street and Broadway were he was then, in fact, stabbed.
Witnesses testified that they had seen the moment when Garcia collapsed on the ground and then saw police rushing towards the crime scene and immediately handcuffed Antoine Poprilo, 37, who was then still holding the knife.
Paramedics and an ambulance arrived at the spot within a few minutes and Garcia was taken to the nearby Bellevue Hospital. Doctors announced him to be in serious but steady condition.
Police told the reporters that Garcia, who works as an attendant for home care in the region of Upper Manhattan, was shopping at that point of time when the incident took place.
The stains of blood spilled over the spot on 45th Street along with blood-stained breakfast sandwich, medical gauze, coffee, a shirt and headphones. Initially, the passers-by took the scene as a movie-set but thereafter realized that they had witnessed a real crime scene in the city of New York. After that, it was cordoned off through yellow tape and was followed by the investigations of uniformed police officials.
Another witness, Marianne Wedgeworth, 43, said that she had heard the sirens of emergency vehicles when she was about to leave the hotel. She added, “I wasn’t sure. I thought they were shooting a movie.”
