New York diplomatic parking tickets spin out of control
2008-06-26 16:11:57 (GMT) (Caymanmama.com - News)Manhattan, New York (CaymanMama.com) — With a decade since former Mayor Rudy Giuliani’s first declaration of war upon the diplomatic scofflaws over the issue of unpaid parking tickets, New York City still owes more than $18 million.
Carmen Mercer, 35, stood outside a DMV office in Midtown and claimed, “they should pay.” He further added, “Everybody else has to pay. It comes with the responsibility of having a car.”
Outside countries seem to be in no rush to pay off their deferred debts. The majority of them were usually incurred before the agreement, which was made in 2002 and provided the people with more parking space. Due to the deal, the number of tickets issued have substantially decreased by 94%. On the other hand, the amount of debt owed would have been $ 21 million.
The total debt has stuck at $18 million from 2005. Approximately 175 countries should be blamed for the missing amount, with Kuwait and Egypt leading in the category of offenders. Officials in the consullate of Egypt have declined to comment upon this statement and the calls that were given to the Kuwaiti embassy have never been answered.
Meanwhile, through the mayor’s office there has come a reply via email which mentions that it “is still seeking to recover the money still owed to the city. While the old parking ticket revenue is important, we are more focused on collecting money from unpaid property taxes on non-diplomatic uses of their consular properties.”
This city filed a case last year in the supreme court of America over the issues of property taxes that were owed by India and Mongolia. The judiciary ruled that the foreign nations are immune from paying all the taxes associated with property. Until March, a sum of $57.6 million had to be paid by the different nations.
