New version of Rota-virus vaccine endorsed by government
2008-06-27 17:57:58 (GMT) (Caymanmama.com - Health News News)Atlanta, Georgia (CaymanMama.com) — One of the federal advisory panels has endorsed the second vaccine to combat the very common and fatal virus that causes vomiting and diarrhea in children. This new vaccine made by Glaxo Smith Kline is a two-dose vaccine made especially for infants. The Food and Drug Administration had it licensed in April. The advisory committee of the vaccine agreed on Wednesday that this vaccine must be added in the recommended infants vaccines in addition to the 3 dose vaccine approved during 2006 and made by the Merck & Co.
Both these vaccines are given orally to children to prevent the rota-virus which is the reason that more than 67,000 children in less than 5 years were admitted to hospitals every year. Although the number of hospitalizations is high, the average number of deaths due to this virus is only 30 per year. Around the world, this virus has become the cause for death of around 500,000 children every year.
The Rota-virus is one of the main causes of severe diarrhea in children and infants but it is better known for being a cause of nausea and vomiting in children which often strikes them during the winter season. The government has typically adopted the recommendation by the advisory panel of vaccines which also issues guidelines for vaccination to hospitals and doctors. The committee has preferred no vaccine above the other.
The 2-dose version of the vaccine may be completed in 4 months as compared to 6 months needed for the previous version. The estimated cost of both the vaccines is around $200. When it was said that the government has endorsed the vaccine, it means that the insurance companies are required to pay for the vaccine.
With a wide use of the older version of this vaccine, there has been a substantial decrease in the rota-virus severity during the last year. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that this virus follows a pattern similar to the flu season but the last season of 2007-08 was mildest in the last 15 years.
