Donors sign up to have their bodies displayed and dissected
2008-07-01 16:13:16 (GMT) (Caymanmama.com - Technology News)Tucson, Arizona (CaymanMama.com) — Toney Dixon’s fascination with dead bodies goes back to her childhood when she would sneak into her uncle’s funeral home. Dixon, now 67, says, “I found my heart racing. But instead of being taken aback and terrified, I wanted to know more.”
Years later, both Dixon and her twin sister, Erlyene Toney-Alvarez, were drawn to Body Worlds, an exhibition that portrays preserved human beings stripped and bisected of skin. According to the younger twin sister, “It’s like standing in the mirror and seeing yourself in a totally new way.” So impressed were the Dixon twins that they signed on the spot to give their mortal remains to Body Worlds that is showing at Germany, England, Canada and the USA.
By signing for Body Worlds, the twin sisters have joined the group of people who believe that by displaying, preserving and dissecting their bodies they will serve more than a burial service. According to the donor program of Body Worlds, it has around 800 people from North America and 6,800 people from around the world.
According to Toney-Alvarez, “I thought, since I like to think outside the box, this would be a really good way to preserve our bodies instead of the typical funeral. It’s also something I can go to my death feeling good about, like I made a contribution to humankind.”
According to the Uniform Anatomical Gift Act of 1965, individual Americans can bequeath their bodies for science. According to such a law, the wishes of the donor were given preference over its kin. A journal published with Association of American Medical Colleges states that there has been a remarkable increase in body donations due to hassle free social mores.
Usually, the most common recipients of body donations have been medical schools. Gunter von Hagens, a German anatomist, developed an alternative by inventing plastination during the 1970s and became known as Dr. Frankenstein.
