SAG president pleads for a stop to strike talks
2008-07-01 16:07:29 (GMT) (Caymanmama.com - Entertainment News)Los Angeles, California (CaymanMama.com) — The Screen Actors Guild (SAG) has asked its 122,000 members to retain their jobs in case the union fails to make a deal with the television and film studios before the expiry of their contract at midnight on Monday. According to the president of the Screen Actors Guild, Alan Rosenberg, there is no plan for a strike vote while the negotiations of the union were “coming to the bargaining table every day in good faith.” He added, “Any talk about a strike or a management lockout at this point is simply a distraction.”
It seems there is a complication due to a split amongst the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA) as well as the Screen Actors Guild that has come to an agreement of their own with the studios. Around 44,000 of 70,000 members from the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists and the Screen Actors Guild has asked these members to cast their vote against such a deal. According to the president of the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, Roberta Reardon, the agreement of her union is “a solid deal.” She blasted the members of Screen Actors Guild for influencing the members.
She said, “The trust between these two unions is really broken. We did not want to be in a situation where we were spending all our time negotiating with our partner rather than negotiating across the table with our employers.”
According to the Screen Actors Guild, the agreement between the studios and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists leads to no increase for the residual DVD payments while enervating both the unions. In a written statement, “When unions compete with different contract terms, actors lose. It starts a race to the bottom that SAG doesn’t want to win.” Iit seems that this ongoing fight had led to a great deal of confusion among the members.
