Study reveals about the gloomy truth about sunscreens
2008-07-02 15:49:40 (GMT) (Caymanmama.com - Health News News)Milwaukee, Wisconsin (CaymanMama.com) — There are many parents who think that they are doing a great service to their children by slathering them with sunscreen during hot, sunny summers. However, a non-profit group based in Washington, the Environmental Working Group, revealed in an investigation that a large percentage of sunscreen manufacturers do not protect the consumers adequately and most of them are made of harmful chemicals.
The group has disclosed that some of the leading brands of sunscreen including Banana Boat, Coppertone and Neutrogena are the poorest performers. Although Coppertone claims that all of its products are lab tested and are effective and safe, the group has proven that 41 of the product’s components contain harmful ingredients and do not protect the skin adequately. Banana Boat refused to respond when CNN requested for its comments upon the study.
The active ingredients in the sunscreens are compounds, which reflect, absorb or block the ultraviolet rays of the sun. These are regulated by the FDA as over-the-count drugs and not as cosmetics. They are rated depending on their Sun Protection Factor or SPF. A higher SPF means greater protection against sunburns. Oxybenzone is one of the most popular ultra-violet ray filters in a large number of sunscreens and has been evaluated as safe by FDA. The Environmental Working Group has analyzed that this ingredient can penetrate into the skin and may pose serious health concerns including cancer and hormone disruption.
The Skin Cancer Foundation, a non-profit group that is dedicated to information the consumer safety from sun, says that the confusion created due to this study may stop people from using sunscreen. Using sunscreen products can be highly effective and safe if they are used as per directions. While the effectiveness of the sunscreens has been debated, the dermatologists suggest that the consumers should apply it at least half an hour before going out and should reapply it after every 2 hours or immediately after sweating or swimming. If anybody is sensitive to sunscreens, they can try physical barriers providing sunscreens like titanium dioxide and zinc oxide.
