South China Tiger photographs are fake
2008-07-05 16:35:40 (GMT) (Caymanmama.com - Education News News)Shanghai, China (CaymanMama.com) — Zhou Zhenglong, a Chinese farmer, claimed a reward for finding an endangered South China tiger in the local woods and taking its photograph as it stared right into the camera.
The story of the fake tiger photograph began when 54-year old Zhou, a hunter and farmer, heard that if someone finds a South China tiger in the local forest, he or she can win 1 milion yuan. The state media accounts that such a tiger has not been seen for the past 20 years. In October of 2007, a man came out of the Shaanxi woods, claiming that he had seen a tiger and showed many digital photographs.
The Shaanxi officials believed the claim made by him, and awarded him 20,000 yuan and praised him at a press conference. The Deputy Director of the Shaanxi Forestry Administration Bureau, Zhu Julong, told a China Daily newspaper that the experts have confirmed the legitimacy of the photographs after careful examination and that hopes have been revived after finding a tiger after two decades.
China’s online community immediately suspected the photograph to be a fake because the animal looked too shiny and among the different photographs shown by the man, the position of the tiger never changed. An investigation was called for by the public when someone produced an old picture with an image of the tiger strikingly similar to the one in the present photograph. But officials continued to say that the photograph is authentic.
Yu, a university professor, said that officials did not want to find out the truth because with an endangered tiger in the area, they knew they will be able to attract huge amounts through tourism and through creating natural reserve. Ultimately, the officials declared that the photograph was fake and pressed charges of fraud against Zhou.
