Anti-smoking ads to be included in some U.S. movies and DVDs
2008-07-12 19:59:05 (GMT) (Caymanmama.com - Entertainment News)San Antonio, Texas (CaymanMama.com) — Six Hollywood studios have agreed to place the anti-smoking advertisements on new DVD movies that are specifically targeted to children. The decision has been taken in order to contradict the power of tobacco that is used on screen. The film studios joined forces with health authorities of California so as to protect the lives of the children from smoking in both the United States and other countries of the world.
Under this agreement, Universal Studios, Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures, Twentieth Century Fox, Warner Bros. and Walt Disney Studios will work together to include the anti-smoking ads in the first few minutes of new DVDs. The scenes will be related to smoking, which have been rated PG, G and PG-13.
According to the president of the Entertainment Industry Foundation, Lisa Paulsen, the advertisements that will be placed on the movies will contribute tremendously in reminding the audiences that the films are fictional but the ill-effects that smoking has are purely real. The Foundation aims at the generation of awareness for social and health issues related to smoking.
Health supporters have worked hard and have been fighting with the film industry in order to reduce the level of smoking on the big screen that aims toward young people. Also, in a recent research, it has been found that 75 percent of the films featuring tobacco were rated PG, G and PG-13. Walt Disney was the first main Hollywood film studio that banned the depiction of smoking in Disney films.
California has also been taking various anti-smoking proposals since past few years. The state also banned billboards showing tobacco to be put up near schools in 1991 and even outlawed the practice of smoking in public areas in 1998.
