Mexico claims its tomatoes are salmonella-free
2008-07-12 20:07:16 (GMT) (Caymanmama.com - Health News News)Jalisco, Mexico (CaymanMama.com) — The agricultural officials of Mexico declared on Friday that their country’s tomato crop is devoid of the bacteria salmonella.
American investigators had suspected the chili peppers and tomatoes imported from Mexico to be infected by salmonella which sickened over 1,000 people all across the U.S. The bacteria is believed to be transferred into human bodies via food that is contaminated with animal feces. The fortuitous consumption of salmonella in humans can cause many intestinal problems which may result in excessive diarrhea, cramps and fever.
The agricultural ministry of Mexico said on Friday that after studying quantities of Mexican tomatoes for two weeks, the inference is that the Mexican tomatoes are salmonella-free. The study was conducted by Mexican specialists in tandem with the United States Food and Drug Administration. The Mexican ministry of agriculture stated, “It’s not possible to accept that the tomato is the cause of infection. The scientific evidence clearly shows that the Mexican tomato has no responsibility in the unfortunate public health problem in the United States.”
Mexico is one of the major sources of tomato production in addition to other vegetables, especially in winter months, and Mexican producers have suffered huge losses due to the salmonella outbreak. The Mexican officials, as per a statement were “demanding” the FDA to recognize the Mexican crop as infection-free. The FDA has already cleared the tomatoes cultivated in most of the Mexican states. But the tomatoes that are grown in Sinaloa and Jalisco states have not been approved yet. It is surprising because Sinaloa’s tomatoes account for almost 40% of the total tomato exports of Mexico.
Since April, 1,065 people became sick all across Canada and United States due to infection from the Saint Paul salmonella strain. The FDA has advised that the infants, elderly and the immune-deficient should avoid eating raw tomatoes that come from the areas which have not been declared salmonella free yet. Moreover, the FDA has advised to refrain from eating raw Serrano and Jalapeno chili peppers.
