Threat of mosquitoes grips Sacramento, California
2008-07-14 19:09:35 (GMT) (Caymanmama.com - Health News News)Sacramento, California (CaymanMama.com) — The Vector Control District and Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito District announced on Friday that very high number of mosquitoes have been discovered throughout various parts of Yolo County.
District officials are concerned because of the smoke-filled skies which prevent aerial-treatments over agricultural areas in order to treat adult mosquito infestation.
“Planes have not been able to treat for two weeks now,” commented District Manager, David Brown. He further added, “As a result, we are starting to see mosquitoes move into the urban areas and we want residents to be aware.”
Bad air quality impairs proper visibility and because of this problem, it remains tough for planes to conduct treatments by air. Although there have been no reports of West Nile virus activity in the County with no birds, animals or humans infected, the District is focused on reminding the public to remain indoors as much as they can until the bad air quality subsides. Moreover, the public is advised to take proper precautions against mosquito bites.
Brown stated, “If residents are going to be out during dawn and dusk when there’s high mosquito activity, it’s important they wear long sleeves and pants or put on an effective repellent to avoid being bitten.” He recommends that the public ensures maximum coverage of their body to avoid mosquito stings and thereby remain infection-free.
Presently, District officials have put the aerial treatment under consideration over high risk areas of South Sacramento. The spraying has been delayed by smoky conditions and could be kicked off early next week depending on weather conditions and air quality.
